Short term visa

The Schengen visa (introduced in 1995) is valid for the following 25 countries:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Iceland
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg
  • Malta
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Sweden AND
  • Switzerland (as per 12 December 2008)

A Schengen visa issued by an Embassy or Consulate of one of the Schengen countries allows the holder to travel freely in these countries. However, please note that a holder of a Schengen visa is still subject to immigration control and is not guaranteed entry into any of the Schengen countries; a visa is not itself a right to enter a country.

  • Indonesian passport holders DO require a visa to enter the Netherlands.
  • Legal residents of Indonesia travelling to Europe on business or as tourists and who are subject to visa regulations, may receive a visa for a short stay of 1 to 90 days valid for all the above-mentioned countries.
  • Legal residents of Indonesia may receive a joint visa at the relevant foreign mission of the Schengen-country where his/her main destination lies.
  • Applications have to be submitted well in advance as processing the application takes 10 working days;
  • Additional requirements for a visa application for a minor, travelling alone: parents/legal guardian's written consent (with copy passport) and minor's birth certificate. For all other requirements, select the appropriate visa.

Mandatory Schengen travel insurance

The EU Council in Brussels has decided to implement as from 1 June 2004 a mandatory travel insurance as a precondition for visa issuing. In principle this means that a visa applicant has to submit, together with his visa application for a short stay in the Schengen member states, proof of a valid personal or collective travel insurance covering:

  • Expenses for repatriation for medical reasons, urgent medical care and/or
  • Urgent medical treatment in a hospital
  • The minimum value of the mandatory travel policy is determined at Euro 30.000,00
  • Insurance premiums for these policies are charged by the insurance company and not by the diplomatic or consular representation
  • Further information can be obtained from the EU/Schengen diplomatic or consular representation where the visa application is lodged.
  • Please note: the insurance should only be bought after the visa is approved!

A visa with limited territorial validity (Benelux : Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg only)

A territorially limited visa (TLV) for the Benelux may ONLY be considered for issuance in highly exceptional and/or very urgent cases and is strictly limited to matters regarding humanitarian considerations (e.g. in cases of very serious illness or death of a family member in the Netherlands), the national interest or international obligations.
